Cancer Awareness 101: The Crucial Signs You Should Never Ignore

Cancer is a word that sends chills down the spine and fills the mind with uncertainty. Today is February 4th, observed as World Cancer Day. On this day, let’s create awareness about cancer and its early detection with well-established facts and not rumours.

Knowing Cancer Inside Out

Uncontrolled cell growth that results in abnormal cells that multiply quickly and form masses known as tumours is the root cause of cancer.

Cancer can strike anyone at any age. However, cancer becomes more common with age, with most instances affecting those 50 years of age or older. It’s critical to avoid attributing any unexpected changes, aches, or pains to “just getting older” or assuming that a symptom results from a known medical issue. It’s always preferable to listen to your body and see a doctor if something is not normal for you, regardless of age.

What are the Crucial Signs of Cancer to Lookout For?

Early detection of cancer saves lives. It’s not necessary to try to learn every sign and symptom of cancer; instead, pay attention to your body and notice anything that doesn’t feel right for you.

General signs to be aware of, but remember these are not definitive and can have other causes:

  • Unexplained weight loss or gain without trying
  • Uncontrollable night sweats or high fever
  • Persistent fatigue and feeling tired even after rest
  • Changes in bowel or bladder habits
  • Unusual lumps or bumps, especially the ones changing in size or shape
  • Skin changes like new moles, existing moles changing appearance, persistent sores, or yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Chronic pain that doesn’t improve with rest or medication
  • Unexplained bleeding or bruising
  • Persistent cough or hoarseness
  • Difficulty in swallowing

The Conclusion

Cancer is an umbrella term for various cell deformities happening in all parts of the human body. Given that there are over 200 distinct varieties of cancer, each with its own set of symptoms, there is no “one size fits all” solution to cancer indications. Numerous symptoms that appear unusual may have non-cancerous causes after conducting medical tests. Successful cancer therapy depends on early identification, so if you see any persistent or alarming changes, you should consult a doctor right away.
